When the villa was originally built, over 200 years ago, it had built within the structure several defense measures to fend off the pirates that frequently raided Paxos homes. In the modernisation of the villas may of them are retained. Look above the main doors and you will see the outlet of the pipes that went through the wall to the inside of the house where the occupants used to pour hot olive oil on the pirates trying to break down the doors. By the side of the external doors and upstairs windows you will see the slots in the walls (now filled with glass) where the occupants fired upon the raiding pirates. We're pleased to say that things have now improved and you can be assured of peaceful and quiet stay in these luxury villas.
